Things To Do In Sitka Alaska

Things to do in sitka alaska

What to do in Sitka Alaska?

We often start or end our cruises in the charming town of Sitka; this incredible community has a lot to offer visitors.

With great food, incredible history, and outstanding people, Sitka is a great addition to your Alaskan cruise.  Sitka was once the Russian capital of the Alaskan territory, and the town’s architecture still reflects these Eastern European roots. It also has a rich Native American history, and is still highly influenced by the Tlingit culture.

Today you can enjoy a stroll along the harbor, or explore some of the cultural artifacts in the Sheldon Jackson Museum.

This island town is a perfect stop to help you readjust to dry land, or get your bearings before heading out on the Sikumi. Whether you choose to spend a few days here before your cruise or linger after, you will be glad you included Sitka in your itinerary.

Juneau, Alaska History:

Juneau Alaska Travel Info

Juneau Alaska Travel Info

Juneau is the Capital of Alaska (since 1906) and is the second largest city in the USA by area. Juneau has a population of around 31,275.  Juneau is a little bit larger than Rhode Island and is located at the foot of Mount Juneau. One of the unique aspects of Juneau is that it sits on the Gastineau Channel and it has no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska. The reason is due to the extremely rugged mountains surrounding the city, so everything in Juneau has to be either flown in or carried in via a ferry (except for king crab legs 🙂

Even though Juneau is located really far north of the equator, it has a relatively mild climate. The average low temperature is around 23 degrees because of the influence of the Pacific Ocean.

About Petersburg, Alaska

Things to do in petersburg alaska

Petersburg, Alaska had its’ beginnings in the 1890’s when Norwegian pioneers settled there. It is a picturesque small town that still makes its living from the sea and still proudly embraces its Norwegian heritage today.

Modern day Petersburg has a population of just over 3,000 people and the town has grown into one of the largest fishing communities in Alaska. Halibut, salmon, herring and crab are all fished for today, much like they were when this prosperous community was founded. Petersburg has remained an authentic and peaceful small town, largely due to the fact that the big cruise ships can’t enter its narrow harbor.

Petersburg is located in South East Alaska on Mitkov Island, which is divided from the much larger Kupreanof Island by a channel called the Wrangell Narrows. Mitkov Island sits in the heart of Alaska’s Inside Passage with Frederick Sound being the other main body of water to surround it.

Things To Do In Seward Alaska

things to do in seward alaska

Named after William H. Seward, Seward is one of Alaska’s most popular towns, largely because of its scenery, wildlife, and fishing. Resurrection Bay is a popular destination for sightseers and fishermen alike. During the summer months, Seward is busy with cruise ship and railway traffic.

Populated by nearly 3,000 residents, Seward was incorporated in 1912.  It was the supply base for Alaska Railroad construction between 1915 and 1923. The famous earthquake of 1964 created tsunamis that destroyed sections of the town and claimed several lives.

Today the city relies on commercial fishing, tourism, the transport industry, and a state prison for its economy. More then 300,000 cruise ship passengers come through the town each summer.

Kenai Fiords National Park and Misty Fiords National Monument are two commonly visited destinations and make for wonderful places to cruise. Humpback whales, killer whales, sea lions, seals, sea otters, bald eagles and puffins are just some of the wildlife that inhabit the area. Whittier alaska charters are quite common and very rewarding.

Whittier and its population of a few hundred sit right on Prince William Sound. Situated on the northeast edge of the Kenai Peninsula. Visitors to Whittier can enjoy many activities both on the water and on the shore.

The big buildings that comprise Whittier were built in 1948. The army built a 14-story, 198 apartment building for family housing and Army bachelors quarters. The Buckner Building, which was completed in 1953, has 1,000 apartments. At one time it was the largest building in Alaska. It’s been dubbed the “city under one roof” because of its hospital, bowling alley, theater, gym, swimming pool and various shops. The facility remained active until 1960. In 1964 the building was converted to condominiums and today houses the majority of Whittier residents.

Besides the sound, Whittier is only accessible one route. The 2.5. mile long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel connects Whittier to the rest of Alaska. The $70 million road was completed in summer 2000. The tunnel has one lane which is shared by buses, trains, and cars.
