While considering my Alaska cruise, I talked to many friends who had takencruises before. The majority of them had been on large cruise ships. Although they seemed to have had fun, they didn’t talk about the things that I was excited about; seeing breaching whales, kayaking amongst glacial ice, hauling in monster Halibut, or watching Grizzlies feast on Salmon.

One friend I spoke to, however, did talk about all of those things and a whole lot more. He said his trip had been the best vacation experience he had ever had and he couldn’t wait to get back to Alaska and the Sikumi. I checked out their website and the rest is history.
The Sikumi offers a unique freedom, unparalleled in the Alaska cruise industry. Right from the start of the trip, the captain adapted the trip itinerary to match the desires of the passengers. When we wanted to fish he would stop the boat and we would fish for a while. If we wanted to get off the boat we would stop, anchor, and hop onto the skiff. Right from the start I felt like I had real input into what we were going to be doing, an awesome feeling to have on vacation.
I felt almost like I was at home on the ship. My room was amazing – I looked forward to retiring there every night. The food was some of the best I have ever had. And the general service of the crew was absolutely fantastic. The ship was kept in immaculate condition for the duration of the cruise. I was sad as we pulled into port at the end of the cruise, but already looking forward to coming back.
I would recommend the Sikumi to anyone interested in getting out and experiencing Alaska, rather then just seeing it. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and a new place in your heart for one of the most awe inspiring places on the face of the earth.
